The latest update from Meta's Cambria project to replace your laptop with mixed reality technology

Meta's Project Cambria continues to attract attention. Since the end of last month and on the sidelines of its company's quarterly results presentation, Mark Zuckerberg indicated that Meta will launch "Project Cambria," an ambitious mixed reality headset, before the end of the year. A device intended for professionals which, according to Zuck, can function as a computer.

According to new information from The Information, the Cambria has been described internally as a "face laptop" or "face Chromebook". It is believed to have similar specifications to those of the Chromebook and will use Meta's VR operating system, which is based on Android. It is expected to be compatible with web-based tools and services, as well as some Quest applications. However, even though the Cambria is touted by the Meta as a future-to-work device, it may not be able to run the native desktop applications that are commonly used by many companies.

According to the same source, the Cambria has high-resolution image quality. This may allow the wearer to read the text clearly, so that they can send emails or a code while wearing the headset. In other words, it may be applicable for professional purposes. Cambria will provide the wearer with a view of their surroundings using outward-facing cameras. This feature, called full-color transit, will allow for mixed reality experiences. When Meta announced the Cambria in October 2021, it said the headset would include eye-tracking and facial expression recognition features. User avatars in the likes of Horizon Worlds and Workrooms will reportedly reflect their expressions and where they look.

The headset is believed to be heavier than the Quest 2 due to a larger battery. However, it appears to have been placed in the back for a better balance. The Cambria is said to hit shelves around September and will cost more than $799. It was originally scheduled to launch last year, according to the report, but was delayed due to supply chain issues and other complications from the pandemic.
