A bug in the Samsung Galaxy S10 allows any fingerprint to unlock
The fingerprint scanner on the Galaxy S10 and possibly other Samsung phones can be bypassed but the company is already fixing the problem.
Somewhat bad news comes from The Sun, which spoke to a British couple who discovered the mistake. After installing the Samsung Galaxy S10 wife in a cheap silicone case that covered the front and back of the phone, she realized that her husband was able to open it easily, although his fingerprint was not registered on the device.
According to Reuters, Samsung said on Thursday it was aware of the problem and would offer a solution "soon."
The company claims that the problem stems from a fingerprint scanner that recognizes the pattern of a silicon phone case with a fingerprint.
It is unclear which phones will be affected, but given that the S10, S10 + and Note 10 all use an ultrasound scanner inside the screen, it is likely that all these devices will suffer from the same problem.
This is not the first problem with fingerprint scanners on Samsung phones. In April, it was discovered that they could be deceived using a 3D fingerprint.
The problem is serious enough to prompt KaKaobank in South Korea to tell its customers to stop using the Galaxy S10 fingerprint scanner to sign in to its services until the bug is fixed.
Even if you don't raise a case on your Samsung phone, the problem is still worrying. A spokesman told The Sun that the company only recommends users to use Samsung-approved accessories. But if a cheap plastic box is all it takes to defeat the security of the system, one has to wonder if there are other errors that have not yet been discovered.
