Video: Researchers develop robot-sensitive touch skin that gives them a sense of touch
Professor Gordon Cheng and his team at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) have developed small hexagonal panels that robots can use as electronic skin, giving them a sense of touch. Professor Gordon Cheng's last project was to cover a human-sized robot with 1260 of these cells, thus creating the world's first independent human robot with artificial leather covering his entire body to the toe.
The H-1 robot is covered in 1260 hexagonal cells equipped with 13,000 different sensors, located on the upper body, arms and legs as well as the soles of the feet. Allowing the robot to balance on one leg, walk on uneven surfaces, and even give a person a hug without crushing it. The latter may seem simple, but it requires many real-time calculations due to the large number of contact points between people hugging and different pressures.
