How to block Internet Explorer from accessing the Internet in Windows 10

Although Internet Explorer is still included in Windows 10 for legacy enterprise purposes, Microsoft now considers Edge as the default Windows browser.

However, you may still wonder how to disable Internet Explorer (IE). You may not want other users to work on your system and want to block Internet Explorer from your system

How to block Internet Explorer from accessing the Internet via Windows Firewall

Windows includes a built-in firewall that allows you to control how programs connect to the Internet. You can set up a new rule here to block all connections through Internet Explorer.

To get started, search for Windows firewall and open Windows Defender using Advanced Security. Click Outbound Rules in the left panel, then select New Rule from the left.

In the resulting rule type window, choose Program and click Next. You will then need to browse to the Internet Explorer executable.

When you install a 64-bit version of Windows 10, you'll find folders for Internet Explorer in the Program Files and Program Files (x86) folders. In our test, blocking the IE version inside Program Files had no effect, but blocking the file inside Program Files (x86) prevented both executables from running.

As a result, you must block the following file if you are using a 64-bit Windows operating system:

C: \ Program Files (x86) \ Internet Explorer \ iexplore.exe

If you are using a 32-bit Windows operating system, this is in the following path:

 C: \ Program Files \ Internet Explorer \ iexplore.exe

Choose Call Blocking and set it to apply to all three available location types. Finally, give it a descriptive name like Block Internet Explorer. You can also set the description if you want.

Once confirmed, Internet Explorer will not be able to access anything on the Internet.
