Police use Twitter to preempt hate crimes

Police will use artificial intelligence to predict realistic hate crimes based on Twitter comments in the UK's first ever trial.

According to the British Telegraph, the artificial intelligence system, developed by researchers from Cardiff University, will be used to match hateful comments on Twitter with sites in the UK in an effort to prevent offline violence.

Researchers have shown that as the number of “hate tweets” - those perceived as aggressive in terms of race, ethnicity or religion - increases from one location, the number of racially and religiously aggravated crimes, including violence, harassment and criminal damage, has increased.
