Turkey fines Facebook for violating data protection laws

Turkey's Data Protection Authority says it has fined Facebook 1.6 million TL ($ 280,000) for violating the country's data laws.

The Turkish Personal Data Protection Council said on Thursday that personal data belonging to 280,959 Turkish users, including their names, gender, date of birth, relationship status, religion and search history, was breached in clear breach of data.

She said that Facebook had failed to take "the necessary administrative and technical measures" and had not fulfilled its "data protection responsibilities".

Earlier this year, Turkish authorities fined Facebook $ 289,000 for breaching a separate data law related to a software bug.
