WhatsApp is testing self-destruct messages
WhatsApp is developing a new feature that allows you to set your messages to self-destruct after a certain period of time. The new "disappear messages" feature first appeared in version 2.19.275 of the Android app, but it was WABetaInfo that first discovered the feature and notes that it may not be available to everyone on the beta version yet.
Disappearing messages can be useful for anyone who needs to send a sensitive piece of information permanently. We've already seen the feature used by the Telegram messaging app, which allows you to send self-destruct messages using the Secret Chats feature in the app. Gmail also added a similar feature in its redesign last year.
Currently, WhatsApp for the feature seems much more sensitive, although WABetaInfo indicates that the feature is currently in the development stage and is likely to be subject to change. In its current form, WhatsApp allows you to set messages to delete after 5 seconds or an hour and the feature appears to be available only in group conversations, as you must commit to sending every message sent in the deleted chat after a specified period of time.
WABetaInfo does not have any details about when the feature may be available to everyone, or what capabilities you will eventually enjoy. But the commitment to provide more security in the world's most popular messaging app is not a bad thing.
